Jeff Ladd's Books on Books

Jeff Ladd has started an exciting new project, under the umbrella of his publishing company ‘Errata Editions’.
The ‘Books on Books’ series is an on-going publishing project dedicated to making rare and out-of-print photography books accessible once again to photobook enthusiasts.
Each edition presents the entire content, page for page, of an original master bookwork that has, until now, been too rare or prohibitively expensive for most of us to experience. These are not facsimiles, but complete studies of those original masterpieces. Through a mix of classic and contemporary titles, the series will span the breadth of practice as it has appeared on the printed page, allowing further study into the creation and meanings of these great works of art.
The first two-thirds of each book shows, page for page, every spread of the original. But Jeff has also commissioned some of the finest writers on photography to contribute a 3000-4000 word essay about each book. As well as discussing the photography, the essays also look at the book object itself, and its relevance in the history of the medium. Other chapters include a short essay on the original book’s production, as well as biographic and bibliographic information of each artist.

Street life is our shared experience of common places.
The Gold Coast has a very particular street culture of holidaymakers, beachgoers, surfers, glamorous figures – and its fair share of lost souls.
By definition, the street is a very public space – but there are also private, unseen, transitory moments. Moments captured by the keen eye of the photographers in this exhibition.
Jeff Carter worked as a news and freelance photojournalist before coming to the Gold Coast regularly from the mid-1950s. John Gollings, now best known for his architectural photographs, made a study of Gold Coast street scenes in 1974. And Trent Parke has taken the most recent work in the exhibition, over the past year. Parke’s images may look like the results of chance, but they are the result of prolonged and careful observation and great patience.

At this event, Sean Corcoran, Curator of Prints and Photographs at The Museum of The City of New York, will lead a panel discussion exploring the tradition of street photography, the skills that make a street photographer, and the contemporary issues affecting the way street photographers work today.
Sean will be joined on the panel by Gus Powell, Jeff Mermelstein and Matt Stuart.

The Eye Studio Gallery has an exhibition of photographs by Jeffrey Ladd, running from December 6th until January 26th 2008. The show brings together 24 photographs of religious festivals and ceremony in Mexico and Nicaragua. There will be an opening reception on Thursday December 6th from 6-8 pm.
You’ll find the Eye Studio Gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea gallery district, at 526 West 26th Street. It’s in suite 507 on the fifth floor. Apart from specific event dates and the opening reception, you’ll need an appointment to get into the gallery. You can arrange one by calling (212) 242-1593.
Paul McDonough Exhibition

Sasha Wolf’s new gallery in Tribeca is opening with an exhibition is of Paul McDonough’s New York street work from 1968-1972.
McDonough arrived in New York in 1967 with a 35mm camera and an entrée – through childhood friend Tod Papageorge – into the photography workshops and social networks of street photographer Garry Winogrand.
Emerging from an early career as a studio easel painter, McDonough found photographing on the streets liberating. “It satisfied my sketching impulses,” he said. “… I learned to carry a camera everywhere, all the time, loaded with 400-speed film.”
This show is a must-see for all lovers of street photography. We recommend heading down to 10 Leonard Street, Tribeca, New York before the show ends on 10th November.

Richard Kalvar joins In-Public

We are extremely proud to announce that the well-known Magnum photographer Richard Kalvar has joined In-Public as a Master. Intriguing and often amusing, Richard’s work always lingers in the memory.
Earthlings is a fascinating record of the many human encounters Richard has made during his 40-year career. The book is due to be released in the US on September 18th 2007, to coincide with a show of 43 large prints at the Leica Gallery, 670 Broadway, New York, NY10012.
Earthlings has been available in the UK since April and in France since March (as Terriens). The publisher in all three countries is Flammarion.

Joel Meyerowitz
In 2006 Joel Meyerowitz began a project to create a photographic archive of New York City’s 29,000 acres of parkland. Already numbering nearly 1500 images, the archive is expected to include 4000 photographs by the time it concludes in 2008.
The central theme of the archive is the areas of wild nature that still exist within the parks system; places where the unexpected beauty of the ancient forests and coastline provide a retreat for New York’s citizens.
“Wild in New York”, a work in progress, will be on show at the Edwynn Houk Gallery, 745 Fifth Avenue, New York from June 5th to June 21st 2007.

Influences, trends and friends
